Windows 11 25H2 Official Release: Simple Upgrade, 4 Known Bugs

Microsoft has officially rolled out Windows 11 version 25H2, the latest major update in the Windows 11 lineup.

The release focuses on AI-assisted secure coding and enhanced build-time and runtime vulnerability detection to improve overall system security. Microsoft has also removed outdated components like PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) to make Windows leaner and more efficient.

Because Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 share the same codebase and servicing branch, all new features introduced in 25H2 are already present in 24H2 through recent updates. Users who’ve installed the latest non-security update for 24H2 have effectively been using these new features in advance.

For 24H2 users, upgrading to 25H2 is quick and seamless. However, those on 22H2 or 23H2 will need to perform a full system upgrade, which takes more time and inherits all features and known issues from both 24H2 and 25H2.

For enterprise and education users, Windows 11 25H2 adds Wi-Fi 7 support and expanded options for removing pre-installed Microsoft Store apps via Intune or Group Policy.
Support lifecycle:

  • Home and Pro: 24 months
  • Enterprise and Education: 36 months

The “Enablement Package” Upgrade Mechanism
#

Upgrading from Windows 11 24H2 to 25H2 uses Microsoft’s Enablement Package approach—similar to previous transitions like 22H2 → 23H2.

Because 24H2 and 25H2 share identical core system files, the 25H2 features already exist in 24H2 but remain dormant until activated. Microsoft describes it as follows:

“Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2 share a common core operating system. Therefore, new features in 25H2 are already present in 24H2 but remain inactive until the Enablement Package activates them.”

The Enablement Package (KB5054156) acts as a master switch, instantly enabling the dormant features. Once installed and restarted, the system upgrades to 25H2 without replacing core files.

To receive the package via Windows Update, users must first install the August 2025 update (KB5064081)—a required prerequisite.

Four Confirmed Launch Bugs
#

Despite its smooth rollout, Microsoft has confirmed four known bugs in version 25H2:

  1. DRM-protected content may fail to play in some cases.
  2. The Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) cannot install .msu packages.
  3. SMB v1 file sharing is broken.
  4. The Media Creation Tool doesn’t work on ARM64 PCs.

Microsoft assures users that fixes are already in progress and will roll out in upcoming cumulative updates.

A Step Toward a Streamlined, More Secure Windows
#

Windows 11 25H2 continues Microsoft’s push toward a more secure, AI-driven, and modular operating system.
By consolidating versions under a shared codebase and using Enablement Packages, Microsoft aims to simplify updates and accelerate the rollout of new features.

Key Takeaways
#
